Smarter Together: Human Psychology Meets AI

In our recent discussions on AI ethics, we established that automated systems lack human judgment and need strict boundaries. Yet across industries, tech teams routinely roll out artificial intelligence tools without understanding how the human brain actually interacts with them.

This gap leads to embarrassing and costly failures—like an airline chatbot making up refund policies or a fast-food drive-thru totally mangling orders. In their excellent book, Smarter Together: How We Think, Feel, and Decide with AI, my friend Michael Clarke and co-authors Manuel Garcia-Garcia and Michael Joffe provide a clear guide for connecting how people think with how AI is actually built.

Understanding How Humans and AI Think Differently

The authors root their product strategy in brain science and human behavior. Drawing from historical cases like Garry Kasparov’s famous chess match against the Deep Blue computer, the book demonstrates a core truth: machines process patterns, but humans actually think. Human choices happen on a sliding scale between quick gut reactions and slow, careful logic.

When AI ignores these human mental shortcuts, things go wrong. For example, “blind trust” leads drivers to rely too heavily on systems like Tesla Autopilot, despite hundreds of reported crashes. On the flip side, when AI systems feel like confusing black boxes, people reject them entirely. This causes medical professionals to ignore AI diagnostic tools, even when the software is actually 17% more accurate than human doctors.

Designing AI that Feels Natural and Helpful

In the second half of the book, the authors turn these behavioral insights into practical design and marketing rules. Through real-world case studies, they show how drastically changing the “feel” of a familiar product can destroy customer loyalty. PepsiCo confused buyers with a $35 million Tropicana packaging redesign that caused sales to immediately tank. Conversely, Coca-Cola created a wildly successful, 9 billion-impression holiday campaign by seamlessly blending new generative AI tools with the classic imagery customers already loved.

The real promise of AI isn’t replacing humans; it is making human thinking stronger. The goal is to build true partnerships where systems know their own limits and actively ask for human help. Whether you are building AI products or leading your company’s digital shift, Smarter Together is an indispensable guide. I highly recommend picking up a copy on Amazon to change how your team builds and manages intelligent systems.

Theory to Practice

To make sure your AI strategy actually aligns with how humans think, run your projects through this 4-step checklist:

  1. Build the right amount of trust: Be clear about what your AI can and cannot do. Show users exactly when the system is highly confident and when a human needs to step in, so they don’t blindly trust it or completely reject it (the Human-AI Nexus framework is a great tool to guide that conversation).
  2. Keep humans in the driver’s seat: Build collaborative systems where the AI is smart enough to hand tricky, confusing edge-cases over to a human expert instead of forcing a fully automated—and potentially wrong—guess.
  3. Keep it familiar and easy to use: Make sure your digital tools don’t make people think too hard. Avoid confusing tech jargon or sudden visual changes that break a customer’s comfortable, everyday habits.
  4. Stop the AI from being boring: AI naturally wants to give safe, average, middle-of-the-road answers. Test your tools to ensure they aren’t watering down your creative work, and use specific prompting techniques to force the AI to generate diverse, interesting outputs rather than generic averages.
